Coming Attractions: The Hatchling

Image
Hello, I wanted to bring to your awareness a short film coming this month and only announced yesterday, called The Hatchling . Not much is known so far besides a score piece being released, but won't stop me from writing about it. First, the wide beak of the Hatchling and the claws show it's going to have the giant duck-like Deinocherirus as the dinosaur at the heart of it. As someone who loves  Deinocheirus  and how bizarre it is, I'm on board with seeing it. This probably one of the first appearences of it in fiction as opposed to a non-fiction work like documentaries or books. And of course I'm glad they chose a dino like Deino instead of thw usual Rex or herbivore we've seen a milliomn times in stories like these. The short also appears to be done in the now-classic 80's throwback style, like a Saurian version of Stranger Things , as evidenced. 1980's throwbacks are so common these days, aren't they? Like, the hand drawn poster style is almost as es...

Coming Attractions: Kyōryū

Image
Just wanted to give this little indie project attention, even more then it already has on other platforms. Concept art This is an animated series created by Ben Mulot and Floating Rock Studio, with a possible game coming too. Pretty ambitious stuff.  Kyōryū (after the Japanese word for dinosaur) is about a post-apocalyptic Japan where genetically ressurrected prehistoric life lives wild in the extinction of humanity, and battle among themselves for survival, like an improved version of Jurassic World Dominion , Tokyo Jungle , or Stray , depending on what you think it's most like out of the three. The CG is astounding, and this is just the teaser; imagine what the full series will do. The creatures move with visible weight and have excellent detailing. They are also stylised, yet still retain accurate designs (for the most part). The samurai-like armour on the Tyrannosaurus stands out, looking badass and fits how they apparently will be Shogun-esque leaders of the world ...

Coming Attractions/News/Unscripted Thoughts: Big John at Glazer Children's Museum

The  Tampa Bay Times  published an article I just had to comment on because it piqued my interest, and it will pique yours too. The basics: Florida Man donates contraband dinosaur to glorified soft play. Concept art from the press release Long story more long, two years ago, the world's largest known specimen of Triceratops (first found by a private group in 2014) was put up for auction in Paris after display in Trieste, Italy for a while, then sold for a whopping 7.7 million and attracted a large outrage from paleontological circles, not wanting a valuable specimen to be lost to science. Now, it has resurfaced as its owner have come forward as Floridian entrepenuer Sidd Pagidipati, and he's apparently going to loan it to the small Glazer Children's Museum in Tampa, FL for three years (or more), now renovating an entire floor and education centre to help accommodate it. I'm quite mixed on the news. On one hand, I'm glad such a magnificent specimen got into a museum ...

Coming Attractions: Talon

Image
This trailer was released just a few days ago.  Talon is a cartoon created by one artist Heather Parra about a baby raptor with magic lightning powers who learns she and other dinosaurs like her will save their world from evil aliens, who if not stopped could cause a mass extinction (..... guess they failed), and they embark to do so. I have one word for it: fantastic! I love the idea of super powered magic dinosaurs, like Avatar: The Last Airbender meets The Land Before Time , and the designs are stylised yet accurate to a tee, which I always love. My only gripe is that generic fantasy wizard who it set up to be the mentor for the series.  It feels out of place in the Mesozoic setting, unless that's the point. I would have gone with a more avian or reptilian look. And also, Talon is mentioned as a Dakotaraptor , now regarded as an invalid genus (long story). I'm hyped for Talon , is what I'm saying, and so should you. I eagerlt wait updates, and urge you to support it...

Coming Attractions: Life on our Planet and Indiana Dinosaur Museum

Image
Hello, and welcome back to Mesozoic Mind. I'd like to tell y'all about recently announced new palaeo-media you may want to keep an eye on and check out once they come. The reason I didn't mention them here is that I posted about them on Twitter before a man child bought and ruined it earlier. Life On Our Planet Hoo boy, consider me excited for this. This is a documentary narrated by God Morgan Freeman to stream on Netflix in late 2023 about the entire history of life on earth, done across eight parts . Not much is shown in the trailer, which is for more nature docs in general, but that's not a problem for me. I'm very excited for it, as the format will allow for not just the Mesozoic, but creatures of the Palaeozoic and Cenozoic to shine. Did I mention the effecrs are being done by ILM? Without the constraints of film execs breathing down their neck like the other dinosaur project they do, the visuals and designs look truly amazing, whether its a pair of the giant ...
