The World of deadspinosaur

A long tme ago in the 2000's, Youtube was filled with animations. You had your Flash, and your Pivors, and those made in MS Paint. And in particular, there was deadspinosaur.



These are youtube animated shorts made by an account not active since 2011. I advid,ly watch it as a ki, only remembering it this year, and it was not until I saw it in a compilitation of 2000s palaeomedia like it, called sauriancore.

All of the channel's video are all to some degree of fights betwern different animals.

Most notable? The Spinosaurus series. Every video featured the sailbacked pharoah fighting other creatures or chased by them.

The more famous of the series is the second line, done in MS Paint. Eps are:
  1. the raptor pack - Spiny recreates a scrapped eding for Jurassic Park III and fights raptors.
  2. munch! - Spiny attacks a very oblivious brachiosaurus.
  3. charge! - Spiny attacks triceratops.
  4. family disputes - Spiny feuds with a Suchomimus.
  5. splashing! - Spint gets chased by a plesiosaur that can go on land.
  6. myth - Spiny awakens a fucking dragon.
  7. ufo invasion - Spiny vs. aliens.
  8. Unity - Spiny must work with the other dinosaurs to defeat the aliens. And they said Avengers is the most ambitious crossover.
  9. Stealth - Spiny vs. a sand worm
  10. Sharp - Spiny vs. a stegosaurus.
  11. The Best v1 and v2 - The classic T. rex vs. Spino matchup.

Although it bears mentioning there was a first one. it was made by photomanipping images.

So what do I think of them?

Let's not beat around the bush, they're pure awesomebro in its original form: every creature is willing to fight and kill each other. At least some flee against threats.

Most of the designs are exactly what you imagine for a hastily made web series from the 2000s: very simple, many just stick figures. Spiny has overly long legs and thin tail. Also note that many of the more detailed models have slit eyes to add to the monstrous look.



The same goes for behaviour: every creature is a roaring monster read to fight and chase. Althogh it bears nentioning even then there are nuances. In "charge", rather then continuousy persue Spiny after he leaves, the Triceratops just goes back to eating since its no use chasing after a threat leaving.

The animation? They're... charming. They're midway between stick figures and genuinely detailed. Nonthing has any weight, as evidenced when you see Spiny jumping metres in the air. Backgrounds meanwhile are par for web shows like this, simple digital blobs.

All in all, Deadspinosaur videos are incredily cheesy and ridiculous artifscts of 2000s internet, but certainly memorable. Do watch it regardless if you grew up with them or not. And hey, they still have more soul and artfulnes then AIGC.

Well, Walking with Dinosaurs 2025 came and went. The reboot to the icon of palaeodocumentaries, promising a new take that would appeal to audiences not versed in the nitty gritty by showing dig sites in action to show how palaeontology works alongside the usual nature doc-style life reconstruction sequences. It .... was .... Not very good. While no one ws expecting it to surpass the original, so much seems to conspire to make it subpar. There's a reduced budget compared to the original, so there aren't that many species, and to choose active dig sites only limited the sites, meaning half the series is Cretaceous North America. Conbine that with being made in the fog of COVID and at a time when nature docs are bing underfunded by a society caring only for sating the rich, and you thus get a series which feel thin and empty, not really a succesor to the classic. But which reaches the heights of what came before it and which plunged deeper then even the movie? Let's find out....

Dinosaurs: A Fun-Filed Trip Back in Time review

It's the third anniversary of Mesozoic Mind. It's been a long three years so far, but I'm doing well, and I promise I will post more (or at least go back to just two per month ata minimum - without burning myself out). What better way to celebrate the oocassion then where I got the inspiration for this very blog's title: Dinosaurs: A Fun-Filed Trip Back in Time . This 1987 VHS short that's actually an extension of a 1980 short produced by the great Will Vinton, simply titled "Dinosaur". Both of them are made in the midst of the Dinosaur Rennaisance and the renewed interest in the subject . Land Before Time was in theatres that year for just one example of 80's dino-mania, the kind that gave rise to Jurassic Park . Dino Lab review - Part one

(Note: video provided may have stuff missing from original cut) In 2005 and 2009, two specials aired on the Discovery Channel, back when it was actually about science and documentaries. These were both called called Dino Lab , and they had a rather novel premise: instead of simply being a doc of talking heads with occasional vignettes of prehistoric life or a nature documentary-style presentation with the occasional talking head, the show has a laboratory in which dinosaurs are brought into and put through experiments for scientists to study. Such a premise is pretty interesting, if an unusual one that invites more questions (where did the dinosaurs come from? Why is the T. rex first not at the lab?). The first special, from 2005,had a special place to me, as the first one was one of the first docs I saw as a kid on TV, when I was very young.
