Coming Attractions/Unscripted Thoughts: Prehistoric Planet: Season Two

Ever since it premeired, palaeo-fans jave been clamouring for more of Prehistoric Planet. Once a season was confirmed, fans went in wondering what it would be about, and many thought it would not be released until many years. But lo and behold: first came a tweet of a Tarchia, and now what has showed up last week: the teaser trailer for Prehistoric Planet: Season Two.

Despite just being, well, a teaser, the teaser looks great, and gets everyobe even more hyped up. Let's dissect it scene by scene, shall we?

The teaser itself starts off with Hatzegopteryx, a fitting choice when it was the last creature seen in season one. Here, it's not seen devouring baby dinosaurs, but two courtshipping one another as the beautiful music plays and David's narration for the teaser waxes about how there's always more to discover about Earth, which is quite befitting for seeing more of what we already loved.

As every teaser does, we then see glimpses of what's to come in the second season. Just to list them...

The volcanic lanscape of India's Deccan Traps with the sauropod Isisaurus, actually deleted from season one but repurposed here. It's quite a striking image, and as someone of Indian descent I am excited to see such a species.

Then comes two theropods hunting. First, what appears to be a troodont ambushing a group of birds, which I suspect to be Presbyornithids. The other is bird, an aquatic hesperornithid, also hunting fish.

Next are:
  • Bebe Velociraptor! That is all.
  • More Plesiosaurs swimming around. I just hope it's not Turangisaurus again. We didn't need three in Coasts.
  • Brief shots of Nanuqsaurus chasing the Ornithomimus. I loved both in

What appears to be another troodont sucking up flies, a segment which piques my interest due to the distinct white coat of it. Then there is a pair of quetz and a rex returning, fighting over a sauropod corpse on a beach. I admit because they are returning species as opposed to new I'm not to excited at them.. but only comparatively.

Finally, the teaser is capped off by our old baby-eating friend Beelzebufo, lunging at a sauropod (most likelt Rapetosaurus, because what else is it gonna feature? Vahiny depereti?). It's pretty striking, and I suspect we may see parental care just like African Bullfrogs have been observed to do.

Now the full episode list has been revealed via leaks. Now if you don't want to be spoiled, DO NOT READ THE FOLLOWING SECTION, ZOOM IN AND SCROLL DOWN FAST.

Special thanks to Mr. Ultra for bringing it to my attention

Nice lineup, and I've been guessing there would be an Islands episode for a while. It's honestly the episode I'm most looking forward to, along with Badlands.

If I had to guess where the others are going:
  • Islands: The Beelzebufo.
  • Badlands: The Troodont segments seen here, due to arid rock formations and inferred harsh temperatures. The baby Velociraptor could also apear, as the mention of Tarchia suggest Asia will return.
  • The Isisaurus could go in either in either Islands or Badlads.
  • Oceans: The hesperornithid and plesiosaur.
  • North America: The Nanuq/Ornitho chase.
I am, however, bemused by the inclusion of North America as opposed to an actual biome or environment. I mean don't get me wrong, the continent definuitely has enough preserved and studied (especially the west) to justify its own episode, but it seems odd when the rest of the episodes cover the species well, unless we're getting new ones and visit the more obscure Appalachia out east. I am similarly ambivalent on Swamps: is it jusat going to retread Freshwater? I just hope it focuses on other creatures, like actual Freshwater life instead of dinosaurs by water.

Anyone back?

To cap things off, here's what what I'd like to see in the season.
  • Dryptosaurus
  • The snake Sanajeh. If you read my previous writings at the blog, you know
  • The little pug-nosed crocodilian Simosuchus.
  • Rudist reefs, which are giant clams that formed reefs like coral. They would have been perfect for Coasts.
Final thoughts: I'm not even mad that it will continue the Maastrichtian setting as opposed to moving back or forward (I personally wanted Eocene or Aptian). The fact that Prehistoric Planet season two will cover what S1 failed to is great news as it is and satisfies many, including me. Anyways, the teaser does a great job of getting audiences and fans hyped. It's amazing a palaeo-documentary get so much fame from the mainstream, not seen since the Walking With... series.

We all can't wait for the full thing, coming May 22. I'll be sure to give thoughts on it then.

Bye for now, and thanks for reading this hastily-written post that is a barely-extended version of this Twitter thread.

And that's it for April at Mesozoic Mind in regards to publishing. Now here's a teaser of where I'll be in the coming weeks. I assure you, what it will inspire will not disappoint you.
