Random Palaeo-Work ideas of the Day #15
Happy holidays! Here's what I got for y'all this Christmas day, two very similar but different stories of prehistoric survival.
Swampland
Remember the book Hatchet? No not the slasher film, the book about a teen who gets stranded in the Canadian wilderness and must survive the elements until rescued. Swampland would be a story (ideally a YA novel) like it, or perhaps Yellowjackets, where a group of teens at a gathering wake up to find themselves back 76 million years ago, and naturally must survive both the local fauna of the time. Other teen stuff ensues, like romance, love triangles, bonding, and feuding. So basically Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. Accuracy would be a given, though it might be because I cannot write let alone picture believable teens for $#!+, and I'd rather focus on that.
Yes, there would be an antagonistic tyrannosaur against the group, a male Albertosaurus. His main reason for constantly going after the humans would be a mix of wanting to eliminate these strange creatures, and that one of the teens killed his offspring early on in the story. He wouldn't be too anthromophised though. Other species appearing would be:
- Deinosuchus
- Stenychosaurus
- Corythosaurus
- Daspletosaurus
- Struthiomimus
- Cryodrakon
- Edmontonia
- Scolosaurus
- Stegoceras
Monogamous
"Lawyer and hospital exec Paul and Kelsey Barnes would seem to have the perfect lives, but they are unhappy and are starting to argue more and are on the brink of separating entirely. Hoping to salvage things Paul takes her on a cruise, but it capsises, sending them to a world prehistoric creatures and nothing's as it seems, hardly a tropical paradise. Not too keen on being dinosaur chow, they look into every conceivable way to get off the island - and could that might be the spark to save their relationship"
This romantic survival comedy would homage jungle romances and lost world dinosaur stories. I admit the premise came to me reading about that old 2009 film Did You Hear About the Morgans? about a simlarly bad couple who wind up in a different place then thir usual and they get better.
The main antagonistic species of the film is a pack of Megaraptorans, which unlike the couple are perfectly functional and loving, seen nuzzling and licking one another. AS a nod to the romance aspects, they would have colourations based off swans, specifically Black Swans, which have black feathers with some white and red on them (you thought they were gonna be impractical white?). They wouldn't be any specific taxon, but a fictional one I dub Cygnusaurus. They would pursue Barnes for a lot of the film, but they'd stop once they get off, its even implied this is call a secret test to help them. Most of the other dinosaurs, based off those from South America and Gondwana, would be similarly made-up.
Merry christmas, happy holidays, and a Happy new year! I'm going on vacation with my family now.
